During the World War II Lithuania was occupied by German army. Then the Nazis started the genocide of the Jews. This tragedy did not circument Ukmerge. Before the World War II, half of the town’s population were Jews. In 1941, Jews from Ukmerge and the nearby area were driven into a ghetto established in Vaitkuškis Manor. From there, they were herded into Pivonija’s forest and killed. Today, the monumentin the place of the massacre reminds us of monstrosities, when 10 239 people were killed.
